Heartstring on Mother’s Day: Gerik Calf’s Heartbreaking Passing
On the early morning of Mother’s Day (11 May 2025), tragedy struck on the East–West Highway in Gerik, Perak, when a lorry collided with a female elephant and her calf near a known wildlife crossing. The calf died as a result of the collision, a sad reminder of the vulnerability of young wildlife in human-animal conflict zones. The mother elephant desperately tried to push the lorry with her head in an effort to save her calf, remaining by its side for over five hours before authorities intervened.
